Where are the Dodge Paint Codes located, and what do they mean?

Before ordering the correct Touch up Paint, you will need to find out what the paint code is for your vehicle. While the location of the paint code can vary depending on your Dodge model, it will always be on the manufacturer’s vin tag sticker. To find this:

Dodge Paint Code Location
  1. Check the driver side door jamb
  2. Check on the passenger, center, and driver side firewall
  3. Look on the driver and passenger wheel well
  4. See if it is on the passenger floor pan
  5. Lift the hood and see if the VIN plate is there

Dodge paint codes are typically three digits long and contain both letters and numbers. They may often start with the letter “P” and will most likely be located in the left corner of the label.

Dodge Paint Code Location

An example code is: PDM

The above code represents the Dodge color code for Dodge Mineral Gray Metallic. PXR paint, on the other hand, would represent Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl, one of the most popular Ram colors.

After finding the code, you can order one of our kits or various products to restore your Dodge to its original factory finish. All our Dodge touch up paint, including our extensive list of Dodge Ram colors, will be provided with free shipping on all orders. Getting an ideal color match is essential, so ensuring that you have the correct Dodge paint code is crucial.

How to repair your vehicle with Dodge touch up paint

While it may seem like a daunting task at first, repairing the damage to your Dodge is a relatively straightforward and easy process. We stock a range of products and kits, which simplifies everything and means you can restore your Dodge to its original factory finish.

Dodge Clearcoat Damage

You can create a professional finish, even on tricky colors like Deep Cherry Red Crystal Pearl, by following the suggested steps below. To achieve a flawless factory finish, always read & follow instructions included in your shipment.

Before starting, make sure you check the weather, the temperature where you are painting should ideally be above 70-degree Fahrenheit to get the best results. Note: steps below are for guidance only. To create that factory finish, always read and follow instructions included in your shipment for best results.

  1. Sand and smooth the area to make sure there are no sharp or jagged areas. Use 320 and 600 grit sandpaper to get a smooth finish.
  2. Make sure the damaged area is clean. Use Wax and Grease Remover to clean the affected area. Wait to dry before next steps.
  3. Prepare the Dodge with masking tape. With the tape, you can stop any other parts of the vehicle from being affected during the process.
  4. Apply the primer in thin layers. Take your time when applying the primer and make sure the layers are thin. Allow the primer to dry for fifteen minutes before starting the next layer.
  5. Allow the vehicle to dry. Ideally, it should be left overnight, but it can dry in as little as an hour.
  6. Apply Dodge Touch Up Paint in thin layers. In a similar fashion to the primer, build up the layers of paint so that it matches the surrounding area. Wait ten minutes between each application.
  7. Before moving on, check to make sure the paint you have applied lines up with the area that surrounds it. If it doesn’t, apply more Dodge touch up paint.
  8. Leave the vehicle to dry. In an ideal situation, you will be able to wait overnight. But it can be dry within a couple of hours.
  9. Apply the clear coat once the paint has dried. This seals the color and is very important for longevity. Apply the clear coat several times, waiting up to ten minutes between each.
  10. If you have done everything in one sitting, you must allow the vehicle to dry overnight.

What paint tools should you use for the Dodge touch up paint process?

Dodge Car Dent Before and After

Choosing the correct tools will make completing the repairs yourself exceptionally easy. Whether it is Gunmetal Grey Spray Paint or jars of paint for your F8 Green Challenger, you will need to consider which product is best for your vehicle. There are a few different products to choose from:

  • Dodge Spray Paint – This offers an excellent finish for large areas
  • Jars of Dodge paint – These are perfect for smaller scrapes or dings
  • Dodge touch up paint pens

At ERA Paints, we place quality above all else, and it is for this reason that we don’t stock Dodge touch up paint pens. We aim to provide you with the best products available so that you can restore your Dodge to its original factory finish. Dodge paint pens don’t offer a reliable finish, and for metallic paint like Granite Crystal Metallic, they tend to flake after a short time. They also struggle to correctly repair damaged pearl colors such as Blackberry Pearl for a 2011 Grand Caravan.

Whether you are looking for Dodge Ram truck colors or need to fix your 2012 Dodge Avenger, spray paint is your best option. It works exceptionally well for significant scratches or dents, and you don’t have to worry about the paint flaking, spray paint provides an exceptional finish on all Dodge colors. The spray paint comes in a big 12oz aerosol canister and is excellent for all types of damage, but especially useful for larger areas.

If the damage to your vehicle is minor, our jars come with applicators and are the most reliable choice. They provide you with the flexibility to tackle smaller areas without worrying about damaging the rest of your Dodge.

The equipment you need to repair your Dodge

One of the significant benefits of repairing the scratch or scrape yourself is that it works out far cheaper than going to an expensive auto body shop. However, it is important to get the right equipment, for the best result you need:

  • Primer – Primer is applied prior the touch up paint and essential for preparing the vehicle’s body for the Dodge touch up paint.
  • OEM/Mopar Touch up paint – The paint can be purchased in either a spray canister or in jars with applicators.
  • Clear Coat – Once the paint has been applied, you need clear coat to seal the color from the outside elements.
  • Wax and Grease Remover – Before applying the paint, it is important to clean the area with wax and grease remover.
  • 320 and 600 grit sandpaper – Sanding the area before starting is essential in ensuring a great finish.
  • Masking Tape – Helps prevent other areas of your Dodge from becoming damaged during the touch up paint process.
  • A shop towel – This will help you dry your car after cleaning and avoid any unnecessary spills.
  • Nitrile gloves – Gloves help keep your hands clean and protected throughout the entire procedure.

We stock several repair kits that include all of the essentials above. It makes the process even more straightforward and is cheaper than purchasing everything separately. However, if you are looking for a few of the items, we do also sell some items separately.

What happens if you don’t fix the scratch or dent on your Dodge?

Dodge Paint Key Scratch

Often it can be tempting to leave small scratches or scrapes and not get them fixed. Unfortunately, doing this can have unforeseen consequences later in the vehicle’s life and make the repairs even more costly.

Below are some of the main reasons why you should fix any damage as soon as possible:

  1. Prevent further damage – Usually, a small scratch is just the tip of the iceberg. As the weather and temperature fluctuate throughout the year, the damage is likely to grow. Water will end up finding its way into the crack and lead to rusted bodywork, which in the short term is just an eyesore but in the long run, can be a serious safety risk.
  2. Avoid additional cost – Fixing any damage early on is relatively easy, especially with a Dodge touch up paint kit. However, if you leave the scrape or chip and it spreads, or rust sets in, you will most likely have to take your car into the body shop for extensive repairs, which is very expensive.
  3. Increase value – dings or dents on your Dodge are more likely to be affected by weather conditions and grow. However, if you get the damaged fixed quickly, the resale value of the car will increase. In contrast, leaving the damage to fester will see the price of the vehicle decrease significantly.

It can seem like a lot of effort to fix your Dodge, but in the long run, it will save you a lot of time and money.

Which Dodge color is the most difficult to match?

Black Dodge Mud Splatter

Dodge enthusiasts have long debated which one of the Dodge colors is the hardest to match. Is it PXR paint (Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl) or PX8 paint (Black)? Some think that custom Dodge colors that may not be on the official Dodge paint code chart are the hardest to match. Others believe that Pearl and Metallic colors are the hardest to match.

  • It is widely accepted that metallic paint is the most difficult to match. For a color like Granite Crystal Metallic, you have to match the color and also the specific flake pattern. If the flake pattern is not matched correctly, the shading will be different.
  • Pearl colors, such as Blue Streak Pearl, are also complicated to match. In some cases, it can take up to three stages of matching to get it right.
  • The easiest colors to match are those that are non-metallic and solid throughout.

When deciding on the color of your vehicle, it is important to pick the color you like the most. However, it may be worth giving some thought to which colors may be the hardest to match if your vehicle was ever damaged.

We pride ourselves on quality products, competitive prices and outstanding customer satisfaction.
