Finding the Honda paint codes. Where to look and what to keep an eye out for.

Locating the Honda color code is simple and straightforward; you will find it on the service tag. The service tag contains two useful pieces of information, the VIN and color code. The Honda color code will be in one of the following locations:

Honda Paint Code Location
  1. Look in the driver’s side door jamb
  2. Inside engine bay near the firewall
  3. Inside the engine bay on the firewall
  4. Check the passenger’s side, middle, and driver’s side of the engine bay

However, unlike other manufacturers, Honda has made it slightly more challenging to understand their color codes because they have a more substantial variation in the number of digits in their codes.

Also, you should specify the factory code when you are trying to match the correct color. Honda uses different factory codes for slight variations of the same color.

Once you have found the service tag:

  1. The color code will range from between 3 and 6 digits long
  2. It will contain both numbers and letters
  3. You will find it at the bottom of the service tag
  4. Generally, it will be directly below the barcode in the middle of the card
  5. It will not be located next to a title or heading that specifies it is a color code.
  6. The code may begin with a – symbol
  7. With the VIN being located above the barcode

An example code is: NH830M

In case you were curious, the digits above represent the code for Honda Lunar Silver Metallic.

If for any reason you cannot locate the color code, you can get Honda paint codes by using the VIN. Contact your nearest Honda dealership. Give them your VIN, and they will be able to give you your color code.

Honda uses the exact color for many of their different models. However, they call each color a different name, despite it being the same color. This is why you must get the color code right.

After finding the correct color code, look it up in our online database and order the proper Honda touch up paint, we will then deliver it to you free of charge.

Follow the process below for the best outcomes using our Honda OEM touch up paint-note, these steps are for guidance only. To achieve a flawless factory finish, always read & follow detailed instructions included in your shipment.

The temperature outside must be right; over 50 degrees F is a must, 70 degrees F is ideal.

  1. Preparing your Honda – Before applying any touch up paint, you need to use soap and water to clean the damaged area. You should also use Wax and Grease Remover after washing.
  2. Protecting your Honda – Apply masking tape around the area to protect the rest of the paint on your car.
  3. Apply the Primer – Make sure to apply a few layers of primer. You should wait around 15 minutes in between individual segments. Letting it dry overnight is ideal.
  4. Smooth the area – After the area has completely dried, you should use 320 grit sandpaper then 600 grit sandpaper to smooth out the area before painting.
  5. Applying Honda touch up paint – When using the color, you have to make sure to not put too much on at once. Instead, do it in thinner layers. This will help set the paint in line with areas around it.
  6. Clear Coat – Once the area is dry, apply a clear coat. This should be done a few times and left to dry for 10-20 minutes each time. Importantly, the temperature should be 70 degrees F before applying clearcoat.
  7. After waiting three days, you can make your Honda shine using rubbing compound.

If you need a video to walk you through the process step by step, then our videos on YouTube can help. It is also essential that you read any information that is provided with the paint you buy. Our customer service team is always on hand to help you over the phone if you run into any issues.

Which products should I purchase? Honda paint pens, aerosols, or paint jars?

Honda Blue Truck Touch Up Paint

It can sometimes be tough to decipher the information online and find the product that will suit your needs the best. Like any job, the product you need will depend on the type of scratch or chip you have.

  • Honda Paint Pens – These are suitable for tiny scratches or blemishes.
  • Honda Spray Paint – Is best used for large areas of damage
  • Honda paint jars – These have brushes on their end and are great for small jobs.

You may notice that Honda paint pens are not among our products here at ERA Paints. This is because they are only useful for nicks smaller than an eraser, and more importantly, they are ineffective for metallic paintwork.

Also, because they combine the paint and clear coat into one application process, the final finish is not even close to the flawless factory finish we have come to expect for our customers. We recommend our paint jars with applicators for smaller scratches as they provide a great finish.

If you have a large damaged area, then Honda spray paint should be your first choice. Significant areas will require multiple cans, but at ERA Paints, we provide 12 oz. aerosol spray canisters, which make the job incredibly easy. These are also 2 oz bigger than most of our competitors. Whether it is a door on your Honda White Diamond Pearl or the bumper on your 2013 Honda Accord, Honda touch up spray paint will do the job.

When you order any of the products we recommend here, either in our dedicated spray kits or separately, we will deliver them for free.

Honda Rearview Mirror

We have already outlined the steps for the Honda touch up paint process above. Now we need to tackle the supplies that you need to complete the task yourself. The correct supplies will ensure you finish the repair safely and to a great standard.

We offer many touch up paint kits that have all of the items listed below in them. However, you can decide to buy each piece separately, but it is not a more cost-effective way of doing it.

  1. The primer is essential to help the paint adhere to the surface better
  2. Choose either the Honda spray canister or the jar touch up paint
  3. Buy clear coat to protect the touch up paint afterward
  4. Don’t forget wax and grease cleaner which we apply after cleaning the area with soap and water.
  5. Purchase the 320 and 600 grit sandpaper help level the damaged area
  6. Masking tape will prevent and paint splashing or damaging other areas of the vehicle.
  7. We recommend nitrile gloves to protect your hands and a shop towel to help shine the car once you have finished the process.

What is a two-step Paint System, and do you need a Clearcoat?

Honda Tail Light Copper Paint

The two-step paint system has been the primary method for painting cars since the 1980s. It involves having a layer of color that is covered with a clear coat.

Before this, cars were painted in a single stage. All the necessary chemicals were put in the paint at once. Despite being a more straightforward process, it has some serious downsides:

  1. Single-stage paint jobs don’t last as long and won’t hold up as well against sun damage. This means, in the long run, it costs you more money.
  2. They lack the shine of two-stage paint jobs
  3. Cars with single-stage paint jobs are not as reflective

On the other hand, two-stage paint jobs are more expensive but:

  1. Last a long time
  2. Stand up very well against the natural elements
  3. Last longer before needing a repaint

How long does it take to fix a scratch if you do it yourself?

The length of time it takes to repair a scratch depends on several factors. Primarily though, it will depend on the severity of the scratch.

  • Clear coat scratches – take the least time to fix because they are the least severe category of damage. In this case, only the first layer will have been damaged, and you won’t have to sand any areas or apply paint. Total time spent should be around one hour. This includes the initial cleaning of the car.
  • Paint Layer scratches – These are deeper chips or nicks that expose the paint underneath. Unfortunately, for these types of scratches, you have to go through the full Honda touch up paint process. This will take around 3 to 4 hours and then requires the vehicle to dry overnight.
